Help with ASE's

I am new to this forum. Help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a number of American Silver Eagle's (ASE's) in 20 coin mint tubes, different dates. I stacked a few rolls (piles of 20 coins, 4 piles) on a table to see if they were all the same height. The coins were from 1987, 2000, 2002, and 2008. To my horror, I found that the 2002 Eagles stacked "higher" then the others. Althought none of the stacks were the exact same height, three stacks were very similar in height, whilst the stack of 2002's were a full "coin" higher then the other stacks.

The 2000's and 2008's were purchased from a reputable high volume local coin dealer, the 1987's and 2002's from e-bay. The 3 other stacks were very close in height. I also weighed the coins and they were very close in weight.

I will take a picure and try to post this tonight.

Nothing to get excited about..the coins are not 100% uniform at all times.

Some have higher rims...the mint collar is at fault in these cases.

Happens more frequently than people realize.

Try stacking some buffalos some time, you could almost form an arch.

I find a humorous coincidence in the OP's nick and the subject matter of the thread.
BTW, I'd be suspicious if I happened upon the discovery in the same manner.

The edge is rolled...that developes the overall thickness...and this process varies a lot....that a lot of vatiation in edge thickness..

As I understand it...this is one of the most difficult aspects of coin forming to remove variation.
